Purpose: The purpose of this method is to use various milks in place of the water portion of a soap formula and to demonstrate adding Sodium Hydroxide directly to the milks at room temperature.


Amounts of milk and lye were used based on 32 ounces of oils with a 2% discount on liquid and 4% discount on lye.

Milk: 11.3 ounces
Lye: 4.3 ounces



Sodium Hydroxide added to Whole Milk
      

      


10 minutes: 140ºF
Smell: Strong caramel/toasty scent present
Color: Bright orange due to burning.
Appearance: Thick with curdle particles



65 minutes: Approx 98ºF
Smell: Strong caramel/toasty scent present
Color: Bright orange
Appearance: Thick with curdle particles
