Soy Milk & Sodium Hydroxide

Purpose: The purpose of this method is to use various milks in place of the water portion of a soap formula and to demonstrate adding Sodium Hydroxide directly to the milks at room temperature.


Amounts of milk and lye were used based on 32 ounces of oils with a 2% discount on liquid and 4% discount on lye.

Color: Light Tan
Ingredients and Nutrition Facts


Milk: 11.3 ounces
Lye: 4.3 ounces



Sodium Hydroxide added to Soy Milk
      

      


10 minutes: 150ºF
Smell: Strong caramel/toasty scent present
Color: Very dark orange brown due to burning.
Appearance: Smooth, thick



45 minutes: Approx 98ºF
Smell: Strong caramel/toasty scent present
Color: Very dark orange brown
Appearance: Smooth, thick, sticky-like consistency. Resembles thin trace.
