Coconut Milk & Sodium Hydroxide

Purpose: The purpose of this method is to use various milks in place of the water portion of a soap formula and to demonstrate adding Sodium Hydroxide directly to the milks at room temperature.


Amounts of milk and lye were used based on 32 ounces of oils with a 2% discount on liquid and 4% discount on lye.


Brand: Thai Kitchen used as it contains no additives.
Color: White
Ingredients and Nutrition Facts


Milk: 11.3 ounces
Lye: 4.3 ounces



Sodium Hydroxide added to Coconut Milk
      

Immediate discoloration and curdling due to burning.
      


10 minutes: 140ºF
Smell: Strong caramel/tosty scent present
Color: Pale yellow
Appearance: Thin curdle



55 minutes: Approx 99ºF
Smell: Strong caramel/tosty scent present
Color: Pale yellow
Appearance: Thick, curdle
